You may know Srey Moch Kim, who hosts the Cinema Club (or at least, her famous cat Misao). Her goal? To introduce you interesting and inspiring movies, make you think about them, but above all, share her passion for the 7th art. Discover what it means to her and what are her favorite movies.

Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Srey Moch, I'm 22 years old and I'm studying cinema at the École des métiers de l'Audiovisuel from PSE institute, in my third year (grade 15). In high school, I was already very attracted to cinema. I love watching movies! My English teacher at Happy Chandara, Mr. Chantha, recommended several Hollywood movies that I found very interesting. I wanted to understand what was behind each work. In grade 10, Mr. Sokchea, our guidance counselor, helped me to find an internship as an assistant in the film industry, which confirmed my desire to evolve within it. I realized that the 7th art was my world!

What subjects are you studying?
Film management, scriptwriting, film history, film club, publishing, colorization and sound design...

Why do you want to specialize in sound design?
When I watch Khmer movies, I sometimes think: "This sound has nothing to do with it!" or "This music is not the right one!". Sometimes it's in bad taste (laughs). I want to show the world the revival of Khmer cinema and be a part of it! In film history, we don't study the history of Cambodia very much and I would like to see this industry develop more in our country. If we look at recent films such as Tum Teav by Fan Sam Ang (2003 - the Khmer like Romeo and Juliet), it's great and there's a lot of budget. Today, there are few comparable films.

Who do you think embodies the Khmer "New Wave" in cinema?
Rithy Panh, probably the best known. I say he is from the "New Wave" just because I love him! Davy Chou also, Sreylin Meas, Danech San and Kavich Neang. Their films show the reality of Cambodia today.

Which Khmer films would you recommend?
A Million Years by Danech San and Diamond Island by Davy Chou for those who are sensitive to "auteur" films. Last Night I Saw You Smiling by Kavich Neang, a documentary about families forced to leave their home, the iconic "White building", before it was demolished. And finally, California Dreaming by Sreylin Meas: something to be scared of!

And what international films?
Joker by Todd Philipps, because it's the first time that we understand why this character became mean. Memories of Murder and Mother by Bong Joon-ho, and 3-iron by Kim Ki-duk. The latter is very interesting because everyone speaks except the two main characters. Everything goes through the unsaid. It's incredible! The director focuses on what is in the frame and not on the camera movements. Without forgetting the films of Yasujirō Ozu, which inspire me.

Finally, which French films would you recommend?
Love at Second Sight by Hugo Gélin, High Life by Claire Denis, All the Mornings of the World by Alain Corneau.
